February is the perfect month to set exciting reading goals for kids! With Black History Month, Random Acts of Kindness Day, and Black Children’s Book Week, there are plenty of meaningful themes to explore through literature.
At Stories of a Colorful World, we’re inviting families to join in on the fun with our February Reading Challenge—a collection of 10 bookish goals designed to inspire learning, empathy, and creativity. Plus, we’ve included a coloring sheet to help kids track their progress!
📚 Black History Brilliance
1️⃣ Dive into a book that celebrates Black history. What did you learn? Share your thoughts with us using #SOCWreadingchallenge!
2️⃣ Read a book about a notable African American. Discover the incredible contributions of Black leaders, artists, and changemakers.
3️⃣ Read a Coretta Scott King Award-Winning book. Show appreciation by writing a letter to the author or creating artwork inspired by the book.
4️⃣ Read a book featuring a Black main character. This is especially meaningful during Black Children's Book Week (Feb. 23 - Mar. 1)!
💕 Acts of Kindness
5️⃣ Select a heartwarming book about kindness. Perform a random act of kindness inspired by the story.
6️⃣ Give a book to someone for National Random Acts of Kindness Day (Feb. 17th). Books make the best gifts!
7️⃣ Reread a favorite book and create a Valentine’s card for one of the characters.
🏮 Lunar New Year & Family Stories
8️⃣ Explore a book that introduces Lunar New Year traditions. Celebrate with a dragon-themed craft and share your masterpiece using #SOCWreadingchallenge.
9️⃣ Choose a book that highlights family stories. Have your child interview a family member about their favorite childhood books and share the tale.
🔟 Pick your favorite book from the challenge and write a short review. Recommend it to a friend or family member!
